Fujitsu COBOL Prescribes Web Opportunities for Orbis Systems

Fujitsu's Web support brings the business benefits of the Internet to Orbis clients.

San Jose, May 31, 2000 -- Fujitsu Software Corporation announced today that Orbis Systems, a Chicago-area consulting company that focuses on the medical, dental and laboratory industries, is using Fujitsu COBOL products to help its clients develop competitive Web-based applications.

Orbis Systems has been developing applications, mostly written in COBOL, for the medical market for 16 years. When Randy Kriz, the company's president, learned about Fujitsu COBOL's Web support, he recognized an opportunity for growth.

"We used to focus only on the medical industry, but now we are offering all kinds of Internet applications," said Kriz. "We've quickly become Web application development experts by using Fujitsu's Web support and, as a result, we're able to show our clients how to take advantage of the Web to enhance their operations."

According to Kriz, the Web support in Fujitsu COBOL has opened doors for Orbis and is helping position the company for the 21st century. "On top of this, we've found that the Fujitsu products are well designed and reliable, with just the add-on features we need," he said.

Orbis uses Fujitsu COBOL to increase clients' efficiency

Among the applications Orbis has implemented using Fujitsu COBOL products are a Web-based dental benefits systems and an online lab result reporting system.

Affiliated Network Services is having great success with their new Internet Dental Eligibility product, ANS-LINK, which gives dental offices the ability to verify dental coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The result is instant verification for both dental offices and insurance providers.

"A couple of years ago, I didn't think we would be able to provide these sorts of applications," said Kriz. "However, we got there very quickly by using Fujitsu COBOL and the COBOL Web support."

Orbis has also been able to speed up communication between doctor's offices, hospitals and medical laboratories by adapting an existing COBOL program to make reports via the Internet. Users of these reports can now quickly see the latest results and, if necessary, compare past results with the click of a button.

"Fujitsu COBOL is the fastest, most reliable Windows-based COBOL development environment," said Ron Langer, Director, COBOL Sales and Marketing for Fujitsu Software Corporation. "It also offers fast development times by reusing existing COBOL code so that developers can work in a familiar language and environment."

About Orbis Systems
Established in 1983, Orbis Systems offers a spectrum of software systems for all components of the healthcare industry including hospitals and their ancillary departments, physician groups and practices, independent providers, medical and dental HMOs. By design, all of the software systems are compatible, interfaced and integrated with one another, so that several can share the same client, patient, and material databases on the same computer. Orbis Systems also provides the healthcare organizations a selection of cost-effective computer hardware. The processing of data, words, voice, and image across multiple networks and existing equipment's interfaces is a goal only a few vendors have accomplished. These features, uniquely important for healthcare applications, are available from Orbis Systems.
