New York City, July 29, 2003 –
Fujitsu Software Corporation announced the release of Version 2.0
of its NetCOBOL® for .NET product, the company’s compiler
and rich development environment for COBOL built on Microsoft Visual
Studio .NET 2003 and the Microsoft .NET Framework. As a premier
partner in Microsoft’s new Visual Studio Industry Partner
(VSIP) program, this release of NetCOBOL for .NET will include the
Visual Studio Premier Partner edition. The Visual Studio Premier
Partner edition provides Fujitsu with a language independent version
of the Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE) that
enables the delivery of a customized COBOL solution for .NET developers.
“Legacy migration has been a strong focus
for Fujitsu Software Corporation in bringing COBOL to the .NET Framework,”
said Basim Kadhim, chief architect, languages, Fujitsu Software
Corporation. “The enhancements in Version 2.0, including improved
performance and better support for the graphical designers in Visual
Studio .NET 2003, provide a strong foundation for solutions, such
as NetKicks™ (our CICS to ASP.NET migration solution).”
Version 2.0 of NetCOBOL for .NET contains numerous
important enhancements, including:
- Improved
performance of generated MSIL code (up to 1.5 times faster than
version 1.1 of NetCOBOL for .NET)
- Enhanced
integration with Visual Studio .NET 2003
- COBOL
language support for additional Visual Studio .NET 2003 programming
constructs (e.g., defining interfaces and enumerations)
- Printing
- Internal
sort
- Compiler
option to generate code that is verifiable (memory safe) on the
.NET Framework common language runtime (CLR)
The Microsoft Visual Studio Industry Partner (VSIP)
program expands the scope of what was previously known as the Visual
Studio Integration Program by enhancing the Microsoft .NET ecosystem
as well as provide increased licensing options to industry partners
for Visual Studio technologies. Fujitsu has been a member of the
VSIP program since 2000, integrating its compilers into Microsoft’s
award winning development environment: Visual Studio .NET.
“Fujitsu
worked closely with us in the creation of the Visual Studio Premier
Partner edition by recognizing early on the enormous value that
Visual Studio .NET could provide as a development platform for other
compilers targeting the .NET Framework,” said Marie Huwe,
general manager for the Developer and Platform Evangelism Division
at Microsoft Corp. “We look forward to expanding the .NET
ecosystem to provide even more value to our great set of partners.”
By releasing
several versions of NetCOBOL for .NET since April 2002, Fujitsu
has been a big contributor in the .NET ecosystem. Fujitsu continues
to be the only COBOL compiler vendor in the market that is selling
a compiler that generates Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL),
the instruction set of the CLR, and is integrated in Microsoft’s
Visual Studio .NET 2003.
“The great demand that we see from our customers for Visual
Studio .NET and the long list of partners already involved in VSIP
is testament to the quality and usability of Visual Studio .NET,”
said Ron Langer, director of languages, Fujitsu Software Corporation.
“Expanding the scope of the VSIP program will ensure that
an even broader set of tools and technologies can all be integrated
under the umbrella of this industry-standard development environment.”
