Sunnyvale, September
12, 2005 –
In a case study recently published by Microsoft, Scottish and Southern
Energy (SSE) is publicizing the results of a mainframe-to-Microsoft’s
.NET Framework migration using Fujitsu Software’s NetCOBOL
for .NET and Microsoft’s SQL Server and Visual Studio. The
migration involved taking a 1.9 TB database and associated COBOL
applications from DB2 to SQL Server, and resulted in an application
that delivered world-ranking performance in both transactions per
second and the number of rows in a SQL Server database.
The SSE migration
demonstrates that Windows servers are fully capable of supporting
the workloads and service levels that have been associated with
mainframes in the past. As Stephen Jeffers, Chief Technology Officer,
SSE, states: "We were looking for alternatives to our existing
IBM DB2 system so as to improve our ability to analyze customer
information and to deliver more timely external reports for investors
in the Country. … The solution has demonstrated significantly
improved reliability and fault tolerance for SSE. … The costs
would have been prohibitive had we stayed with the legacy system
[i.e. mainframe]."
Ron Langer,
VP of Global COBOL Sales, Fujitsu Software Corporation, comments,
“This is an important project to make public as it dispels
any doubt that we can deliver mainframe class performance by migrating
COBOL applications to Windows Server environments. The teams at
SSE and Microsoft Services did an excellent job in migrating this
system, demonstrating that those with vision will always be the
leaders in the market place.”
Microsoft sees
a yet brighter future ahead for SSE. Jennifer Gunnion, Business
Manager, Microsoft UK, said, "SSE is in a position to vastly
improve its management information by looking at other Microsoft
technologies including Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services
and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services."
The case study
explains how the need for flexible reporting and information in
a highly competitive market lead SSE to migrate their financial
reporting system to the Windows Server environment. Microsoft Services
helped an SSE team to perform the migration with the help of NetCOBOL
for .NET, Visual Studio® 2003, and Microsoft Visual C#®.
Jeffers says, "We felt that our developers would get more done
in less time, and there would be a greater likelihood of reuse down
the road. … The improved performance compared with the mainframe
is a major benefit. Some reports that previously took 40 minutes
now only take 4 minutes."
